What does this song mean?

Hello, (again), i was listening to How to Save a Life-by The Fray. I wanted to know what the song means though, because i got like 3 different meanings of the song. plz tell me what it means. tks!

What does this song mean?
well, here are the lyrics to the song to make it more clear.

Step one you say we need to talk

He walks you say sit down it's just a talk

He smiles politely back at you

You stare politely right on through

Some sort of window to your right

As he goes left and you stay right

Between the lines of fear and blame

And you begin to wonder why you came

Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend

Somewhere along in the bitterness

And I would have stayed up with you all night

Had I known how to save a life

Let him know that you know best

Cause after all you do know best

Try to slip past his defense

Without granting innocence

Lay down a list of what is wrong

The things you've told him all along

And pray to God he hears you

And pray to God he hears you

Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend

Somewhere along in the bitterness

And I would have stayed up with you all night

Had I known how to save a life

As he begins to raise his voice

You lower yours and grant him one last choice

Drive until you lose the road

Or break with the ones you've followed

He will do one of two things

He will admit to everything

Or he'll say he's just not the same

And you'll begin to wonder why you came

Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend

Somewhere along in the bitterness

And I would have stayed up with you all night

Had I known how to save a life

Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend

Somewhere along in the bitterness

And I would have stayed up with you all night

Had I known how to save a life

How to save a life

How to save a life

Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend

Somewhere along in the bitterness

And I would have stayed up with you all night

Had I known how to save a life

Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend

Somewhere along in the bitterness

And I would have stayed up with you all night

Had I known how to save a life

How to save a life

i think the song talks about opportunities to try to make things right between two people and letting those opportunities slip away. letting someone slip through your fingers. giving them the upperhand. letting them take control of the situation. at the beginning of the song it talks about trying to have a conversation with the person but once they say its just to talk, the guy turns his head like he doesnt care about what they say. turning left is a sign that he's not taking interest while staying to the right shows that he is. but he doesnt stay to the right. between fear and blame means that you are both in fear and at the same time blame yourself for what's happening. and had they stood up against them and said all they needed to say to them things would hav bn a little different. instead, they let him get his own way and by doing so the relationship they formed went downhill and the guy thought he could continue treating them the way that he did, constantly abusing their trust and love for him. they've got two choices. they can either continue along the road they are going and get themself lost or they could break their relationship off with him completely. you see, before they got to know each other they were friends, but once they tried to change them, everything changed. saving a life can mean two things. either saving the life of the guy by changing him into the person they want him to be or save the guy from himself.

it could also be that the guy gets into a lot of trouble which explains his attitude. mayb the person is trying to help the troubled guy but the guy doesnt exactly listen to what is being said. and had they pointed the troubled guy into the right direction and told him all that they need to say to him, mayb things would have been different. mayb they could have saved him from himself and the way he turned out to be. and who knows? mayb they ended up saving his life just in time because had they not have tried giving him all that support and love, and had they not given up on him, he would have ended up losing control of his life and potentially destroying it.

Now based on what I just said and what you see when you go to work today (i.e. cars, factorys,) what do you think?

Reply:How to Save a Life recounts Slade's mentoring relationship with a teenager at a Christian halfway house who seemed hell-bent on destroying himself—but, fortunately, did not. With the power of a biblical lament, Slade mourns and cries in anger at the same time:

Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend

Somewhere along in the bitterness

And I would have stayed up with you all night

Had I known how to save a life

"This kid had a thousand opportunities to get into trouble and he got into all of them," Slade says. "It was heartbreaking to see all the sacrifice that went into trying to save this kid. A lot of it came out of love, but it came across as self-righteousness."

The song, Slade says, actually is "a case study" of a point in time of struggling with the teen, whose life is finally turning for the better. "I talked to him just last month," he adds.
Reply:I think it is about an boy and girl who use to date and things went really bad. she called and asked him to see her, maybe in hopes that they can get back together. They have the polite smile, that uncomfertable feeling you get. She wants him to tell her the truth and he defensive.

the life to be saved is theirs together.
Reply:"Isaac has said that this song is about him mentoring a crack addicted teen."
