Why do melancholy songs summon feelings of desperation?

Or other negative meanings for that matter? I don't mean that you listen to the lyrics of a song and you feel like the world is going to end, but much more rather to songs with a sorrowful or slow tune/beat? Songs from Coldplay (Yellow) make my heart feel heavy for no logical reason.

Why do melancholy songs summon feelings of desperation?
minor chords create those types of feelings in us ..aside from just the lyrics. Just like major chords are used in upbeat and happy songs. Its amazing how this works. certain chords can evoke certain feelings. Musicians know this and write the songs to create certain emotions in people. Music is powerful.
Reply:i guess its because the tunes are kind of slow and so they slow you down and make you feel sad.

i figure if you were listening to something more upbeat or bouncy, it makes you want to get up and dance and that way you feel better and more energetic, right?

haha hope that helps.
