Songs that are good examples of poetry?

Hi, we were asked to sing a song in class which is a good example of poetry. I want to sing a song which wouldn't be difficult to be sung. Also, it seems to me that my teacher prefers songs with good (or interesting) meanings.

You can also suggest bands instead of songs if that's easier. Thanks a bunch. :D

Songs that are good examples of poetry?
How about Fields of Gold by Sting? (Gordon Sumners) He was an English teacher before he became a Rock Star so you wouldn't have any trouble justifying the literary quality of his extremely poetic lyrics. Several other of his songs would do just as nicely, but that one would be very easy to remember and sing.

Loreen McKennit actually put Robert Louis Stevenson's "The Highwayman" to music, so you could also do that one. It was considered poetry before she ever touched it and she did an excellent job. Paul Simon also put the poem "Richard Corey" to music, but you may have trouble finding that one. Anyway, I hope this helps. I posted some links to lyric sites below so you have an easier time finding the words. If you need backing accompaniment, try Van Basco's midi player. It even supports .kar (midi karaoke) files, and it is freeware. There is a search feature on the web page as well.
Reply:Love, by John Lennon

Imagine, by John Lennon

Across The Universe, by John Lennon

All of these songs can stand on their own as poems as well as songs(poetry in motion). They are both simple and powerful at the same time. Good luck!
Reply:Harry Chapin was a master of this type of song.
Reply:Blasphemos rumors: Depeche mode.
Reply:try norah jones. i like her 'rosie's lullaby'.
Reply:American Pie. Its a bit of an oldy and quite long, but you could pick out a few verses (as Madonna did a few years back).

Reply:ANYTHING by Don McLean is wonderful, especially 'Vincent' (which is about Vincent Van Gogh) or 'American Pie' (which is about America's 'adolescent period' during the 60s)

'For Good' is one of my favorites', but it is extremely hard to sing

I think that 'Lucky' by Britney Spears is actually quite deep...a rare thing from a pop princess, but still perhaps worth the thought as she is so controversial and this may lead to a serious class discussion

'macarthur park' despite being possibly the weirdest song in existence, is especially image-rich and i also consider it poetry
Reply:I would like to suggest nearly any Nirvana song - just find one to suit your taste. Kurt's lyrics were very stark, yes, but they still posses a poetic quality to them. As far as singing them... well, good luck. =)

I think a few REM songs may work.... "Nightswimming" is one of my favorite songs from that band; it has meaning (somewhat romantic nostalgia), it works as poetry, and has a good melody. A number of the songs from "Out of Time" have poetic qualities to them and are worth investigating. "Out of Time" was one of the first albums I ever listened to, and still resonates with me.
