For Holiday by Boys like Girls I think the lyrics have a personal connection to the lead singer. When the lead singer was younger he grew up without a mom cause she died form cancer or something? which is why he only mentions his dad and in when it says "Now it's your turn, take a shot

I think he's basically saying that he wants to break the trend of losing women he loves in his life and hes afraid of commitment or falling into anything so he wants to take a break and run away from it all. He wants to avoid the situation.
