Can anyone explain the meanings behind the song "American Pie", by Don Mclean?

it's about a guy with a chevy, drove it to the levy, blah blah blah for like, 30 minutes every god damn day on the classic rock station.

Can anyone explain the meanings behind the song "American Pie", by Don Mclean?
When Buddy Holly died in the plane crash... that's 'The day the music died'.

but a theory is about Buddy Holly and the plain crash


when he said 'the day the music died' people think he referes to that
Reply:There are many, many references in the song to all kinds of music and musicians. There are several different theories as to what they are all. But Mr. Mclean has never told anyone on the record what it all actually means. So look at them all and decide what it means to you. I just know it brings back memories of the time it was popular.
